Preventing slips and falls on stairways and hallways

When accessing a home safely to reduce the risk of falls, most people will think about places like kitchens, bathroom, bedrooms and living rooms. Areas between rooms like stairways and long hallways can also have falls risks. Here are some tips to make your stairs and hallways safer:

  • Install handrails on one or both sides of any staircase, making sure they are secure. Hold the handrails when using the stairs, especially when you are carrying something. Make sure you can see the steps when carrying large items.
  • Install good lighting on all stairs and hallways with light switches at the top and bottom of stairs and on each end of a long hallway. Think about using motion-activated lights that plug into electrical outlets and automatically turn on when you walk by to help light up the access area.
  • Keep areas where you walk tidy. Don’t leave books, clothes, bags or shoes etc. on the floor or stairs.
  • Check that all carpets are fixed firmly to the floor or remove them completely.
  • Don’t use throw rugs or small area rugs as the edges can be easily tripped over.
  • Don’t walk on slippery, newly washed floors.

Handheld showerhead vs fixed showerhead

Handheld showerheads assist all people, particularly those with limited mobility.

Fixed showerheads can't be raised or lowered. Most handheld models feature a hose that ranges from 0.9 to 1.8 meters. The long hose used on these showerheads makes them a convenient option for people who use a shower seat for self-cleaning care after injury, those with arthritis or having trouble balancing, allowing elderly or people with a disability to effectively clean. Handheld showerheads can help people retain their independence and shower without assistance.

The flexibility of a handheld showerhead also makes it easier for careers to help their client wash, by directing the water right where it's needed. Families with aging or disabled relatives should consider adding a handheld showerhead to provide a safe, accessible bathing experience for all members of the family.
